11:24 pm - LJ Election Results
Congratulations to legomymalfoy for winning the Advisory Board Election!

I've been watching the election play out across LJ and I'm saddened to see so many angry people. I had been hoping that this election wouldn't get dirty and wouldn't get nasty. Alas, perhaps that was too much to wish for. It saddens me to hear that many people think that this has been unfair or rigged. I don't know what can be done to help people feel more confident in the results. Le sigh.

Actually, no, it doesn't bother me that she's a member of the Abuse Team. The Abuse Team primarily consists of volunteers who are passionate about LJ and have been actively involved in the development of LJ for a long time. I do not think that she abused her role to get elected. I do think that her role has made her more visible (both positively and negatively), but the same can be said of vocal community owners. I personally see her involvement in the Abuse Team as an asset. This means that she understands many of the complexities of the issues that the Advisory Board needs to handle. She's had the ability to see a wide variety of different kinds of usage patterns beyond just her close friends and acquaintances. She's also proven her commitment to LJ with her time. I don't see this as unethical at all. I also don't see it as a conflict of interest. Can you explain in more detail why you do?

I am also not bothered by her choices wrt her personal LJ. People use LJ for a variety of different reasons. I do not make any of my personal LJ posts available to the public let alone accept comments. I will probably encourage her to make a more public LJ when we meet, explicitly to engage with people more broadly. This is what I've done and I think that it makes sense for those of us on the AB who prefer to keep our personal LJs more personal.

It's really important to realize that there are huge variations in how people use LJ. That's part of the challenge in making policy that affects LJ. What makes sense for some may not make sense for others. Understanding the topology of users is key here. The more experience people have with diverse users, the better IMHO. Cuz there are no easy answers and having a rep that only understands a fraction of the LJsphere is far more disconcerting to me.

Man...I've always been so quiet in my many many years of livejournaling...I wonder why something finally bothers me now.

Anyway, what about that she finally made a call for questions and comments (to be screened, which is fair, given the shit she's gotten) but also went crazy banning people from her journal so they can't even reply to that?

I left her a very civil message saying I didn't vote for her, and thought she could do a decent job, but she NEEDED to start communicating with users if she wanted anyone to take her seriously. I went to reply to her first attempt at communication, suggesting a public journal for these things or even a community where users could discuss issues with her and each other...and I had been banned.

Does this mean she represents everyone...except other candidates, other candidates friends, and anyone who dared asked her questions before she solicited them?

I don't know what the situation was around her not responding to you. I do know that she got scared by some of the messages and I wouldn't be surprised if she shut down everything. I know that I get attacked all of the time and it's disheartening. I am truly trying to do right and to represent different perspectives even when people disagree with me. Part of the problem with representing everyone is that you have to balance different perspectives and you simply don't have time to respond to every message you get. This is what makes the whole process so difficult. Balance is so difficult. And being attacked often makes you just want to retreat for a bit.

So I'll post more when I know more. One thing to keep in mind though is that there are others on the AB who are consciously trying to serve all users too.

Randomly surfing and dropped by. Wow, I am impressed by the level of detail and dedication you've thrown into the site.

People don't show appreciation as a whole, but I just want to say that what you're doing is awesome. Thanks!

I am happy for not reading all the dirt, but it shows "us" how politics is formed by people on the ground level. Looking at the president campaign, are we surprised? In every aspect were power is at stake people get firty, AND internet is an open source, it is so much easier to watch people behind a screen. They think by calling an abuse team member for the worst you can call a girl that she would pull down, I am glad she stood up and made herself electable.

As an anthropologist it is interesting to see how the online community keeps on developing.

I think your addition to the board is very important due to your wide background and I have a lot to learn from you, blogging wise that is.

I wish you the best of luck in every aspect of life.

Re: in case u dont think im speaking out my ass

I understand that you're angry, but writing in a way that takes the baseline assumption that I'm out to screw you or that I don't care makes it difficult for me to sympathize with your frustrations. I'm trying to learn more about what is known. Please realize that those of us who have been working behind the scenes on this are trying to make this as fair as possible. It saddens me that folks assume the worst by default.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, cambler and jameth were not threatened.

Actually, the answer is simple: I've been in China and LiveJournal is 100% blocked in China. I still haven't had time to check in with LJ so I can't tell you anything more.

PS: I really don't appreciate your use of the word "cunt." I find it disrespectful and offensive. Please don't leave comments on my LJ with that term or I will not respond.

Not on deaf ears, but clearly not at the pace you want. Our first phone meeting isn't for a few more weeks and our first in person meeting is not until September. There's not much I can tell you at this point.

I feel it is a real shame that there is no way for legomymalfoy to be contacted. I just wonder who they can represent anyone other than the people they want to represent.
